Wellness & Native Men Conference
Health Promotion Programs held
the first Wellness & Native
Men Conference in Albuquerque,
New Mexico in 1992. The conference
was developed to acknowledge the
dramatic changes in the lifestyles
of Native men over the years, and
to focus on a return to healthier
ways of living, using a traditional,
Native wellness model.
Native men
from across Indian Country were
selected to advise the staff on issues
that were critical to the wellness
of their respective communities.
Workshops, then and since, have focused
on improving health knowledge and
skills in the four directions: physical,
mental, emotional and spiritual.
These conferences were held annually
until 1997, when the first Native
Women & Men’s
Conference was offered. Currently,
this conference is offered every
other year, with the
most recent held in May, 2005 in
Phoenix, Arizona.
Other locations of the conferences
have included: Albuquerque (NM),
Mesa (AZ), and Glorieta (NM).
