Native
Fitness Training
The Native Fitness Training is an innovative health promotion
program designed to train individuals
to become community fitness leaders
and instructors. Upon completing
this three-day intensive training,
participants will be prepared to
implement and instruct aerobic exercise
classes in their Native communities.
The training design and approach
is what makes this program unique
and exciting. A training manual
has been
developed through a collaboration
of Native and non-Native health professionals.
The Native music was arranged and
produced by Native musicians using
traditional beat and tempo. Most
importantly, the instructor utilizes
traditional Native movement and dance in her instruction.
This is the only fitness
program of its kind in North America.
Taking four years to develop, the
culturally specific curriculum
was developed by a national group
of experts and consultants in the
health promotion and fitness fields.
The community response has been extremely
positive. More recently, this
training has been adapted to target
those working with people of special
needs due to disabilities and/or
chronic disease.
Objectives for this three-day fitness
training session center around
-
learning
skills and techniques
-
gaining knowledge that will enable
participants to organize and instruct
-
market a culturally-specific
fitness program in their communities.
This interactive, movement-oriented
program is designed for participant
success, using learner-friendly approaches.
