Instructor ~ Topics ~ Workshop Details

Barbie Johnson – (Cherokee), a certified weight management counselor, is the lead instructor for the Native Fitness Training. She has instructed this training for The University of Oklahoma, Health Promotion Programs in numerous Native communities across North America and Canada.

Barbie is also a certified physical fitness specialist with 20 years experience in the fitness field. She holds certifications through the American College of Sports Medicine, the Institute of Aerobics Research, Cooper Clinic, A.C.E., A.F.F.A., ESA, NEDITA, and the National Strength & Conditioning Association. Currently, she is director of Health Education for the Mescalero Apache Tribe. Back

  • WELLNESS - introduction, Native holistic models

  • ANATOMY – cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, and nervous systems

  • PHYSIOLOGY – training effect, energy production, target heart rate, environmental factors

  • BIOMECHANICS – body position, movement and principles NUTRITION – diet and culture, macro- and micro-nutrients

  • EXERCISE, NUTRITION & WEIGHT MANAGEMENT - healthy attitudes, healthy eating, energy balance, diet analysis, eating disorders

  • INSTRUCTIONAL SKILLS – how to teach a class, Native learning styles, and motivating tips

Workshop Details
  • Current CPR certification must be shown at check-in, as well as a completed liability waiver and medical release form (ParQ).

  • Comfortable clothes that allow for movement and appropriate exercise shoes should be worn.

  • Written exam will be given, as well as a five-minute team exercise demonstration.

  • Training manual to review and study will be sent to registered participants prior to the training.
