Native
Diabetes Prevention Conference
Health
Promotion Programs was one of the first
organizations to recognize the need for
and, subsequently, conduct a Native
Diabetes Prevention Conference. In
1996, HPP held
the first Diabetes & Empowerment
Conference in Laughlin,
Nevada. Our program was one of the
first to acknowledge that prevention,
healthy behaviors and wellness were
critical to combating the diabetes
epidemic in Native America. These
conferences have been held annually
since and locations have included
Laughlin (NV) and Phoenix (AZ).
Our diabetes prevention conferences
have focused on both personal empowerment (individuals having vision, resources,
knowledge and skills to initiate
healthy lifestyle changes) and community
empowerment (community members taking
a proactive approach to healthy change
in Native communities). Workshops
are comprehensive and complementary,
including educational, clinical and
traditional approaches to prevention.
Individuals with diabetes and their
supportive family members, as well
as diabetes practitioners (diabetes
educators, clinicians, community
health representatives, counselors,
wellness coordinators) and community/tribal
elders and leaders, are invited
each year to join the powerful gathering
of the next Native Diabetes Prevention
Conference.
